The municipal term of the Pla of Santa Maria, located in the nor them sector of
the region of the Alt Camp, in extended flat earth by the Miramar and the
Voltorera mountain range. The main communication channel is the freeway A2 from
Barcelona to Lleida with exit to the village. Also crosses the population the
local highway of Valls to Igualada, the one of Vila-rodona to Sarral and leaves
the one that takes to Figuerola del Camp. The urban nucleus is formed by more
than 800 houses. The urbanizations of the Vedat and the Tower of Santa Maria are
within the term. The population counts on equipped municipal good services, such
as service of drinking water, purification of sewage water, natural gas, Basic
Area of Health, state school, day-care centers, civic center "La
Pista", library, room of acts, room of organizations, municipal radio
station, pavilion multi-sports (sport center), swimming pools, pitch of
football, tennis courts, etc. As for the social life, the Pla of Santa Maria has
been always a town with much citizen participation. Numerous associations exist:
of sport and cultural character or politician.
The great surface of its term in cultivated of almonds
tree, hazels, olive trees, vine and barley. We can observe the typical dry stone
cabins that served as shelter for the farmers. The old nucleus of the town is
plain and marked by the entrance halls that used to give access to the village
long ago, some of them since the medieval period. At the right side of the
church, in the Major street, we will find Cal Robinat, which has a façade with esgrafiats
of the XIII century, very characteristic of the Alt Camp.

HISTORY AND MONUMENTS

THE NAME OF THE VILLA - The place that occupies the
Pla of Santa Maria, was originally comprised on the Castell de Cabra term. It
was populated in the middle of the XII century, when the church of Santa Maria
already existed, reason by which the town was called Santa Maria of the Pla,
although in 1178 it received the name of Pla de Cabra. This last name, in one or
other variants, ended up prevailing to the official of Villalba.
SANTA MARIA'S CHURCH - In
the Pla of Santa Maria it also emphasizes the Santa Mari's church, located into
the old nucleus, that surprises by its proportions and the architectonic style
of the façade. It was built art the end of the XVIII century, following the
baroque style. The lintel of the entrance has a great coat of arms of the villa
and an outstanding sculptural ornamentation that has been kept in all the
constructive elements.
